A native Hoosier, Jason Lantzer holds a BA (History & Political Science), MA (History) and Ph.D. (History) all from Indiana University. Much of his work looks at the intersection of Politics, Religion, and Law in American History. Jason's first book was on Prohibition (University of Notre Dame Press, 2009) and his second book was on American Mainline Christianity (New York University Press, 2012).
Lantzer will discuss key aspects of his book “Prohibition Is Here to Stay”. The book focuses on the life of Reverend Edward S. Shumaker, a Methodist minister who for nearly 25 years led Indiana’s influential chapter of the Anti Saloon League. Shumaker’s influence extended well beyond the state of Indiana. Lantzer uses Shumaker’s life and work to shed new light on the rise and fall of Prohibition and to better understand and appreciate the interplay of religion and politics in American culture.
