Mining has impacted the Wabash Valleyarea for almost two centuries.  The purpose of the forum is to describe the process of searching for mines and mining ancestors, to give a historical overview of mining, and to relate stories from the  four participants’ mining ancestors.

Three will be four speakers participating in the forum.

Cinda May of Wabash Valley Visions and Voices, a digital memory project through Indiana State University, will discuss the “O Miners’ Awake” portion of the Visions and Voices website, including what it contains, what is being added, and how to navigate through the information on the website.

The other three speakers are descendents of miners.  Personal stories and local mining facts will be interspersed into their specific topics.

Jerry Zanandrea, a graduate of Indiana State University, former management consultant to the power industries and  director of the Little Italy Festival Coal Town and the Railroad Museum will speak about the Clinton area coal mines and the collections retained by the museum.

Elmer A. Guerri, President of Marc, Inc, and management consultant and negotiator within the power industries in the United Sates, Canada and Great Britain, will speak about the history of labor and health and safety laws that have  impacted the coal industry, as well as some of the technological developments in mining.

John Daniel, graduate of Indiana State University in Social Studies, will speak of his immigrant ancestors from Wales and Italy who were miners, their hardships, their skills and their stories.

The forum will be moderated by Dea Guerri.
