VCPL Rooms A, B & C
Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
The presentation will explore available records beyond pension files and muster rolls and will introduce the social and political conflicts that characterized life between our ancestral neighbors on the northern home front in the Midwest during the American Civil War. What was your family’s experience during the war?
A third generation native of Terre Haute, Mr. Phipps works at Sony DADC and previously worked for General Housewares Corp. Although his employment career has been in business, he has a degree in history and his graduate studies were concentrated in American religious history. Since the late 1990’s, he has been researching the genealogy and history of his family and has spent several years focused on the history of the Civil War era in and around Parke County, Indiana, where his Phipps family settled in the 1830’s.
In September 2009, Mr. Phipps made a presentation on “John G. Davis and the Democrat Club of Parke County, Indiana” to the Indiana Associations of Historians’ Civil War Study Group. His current writing projects include a paper on the early Civil War volunteer trends in Parke County and an eventual book about the Sugar Creek community of Parke County during the Civil War.
