In 2020, as a nation, we will undergo a census of our country.  In addition to many business uses of the census data, the information can also be used for genealogical purposes.  U.S. census records can offer a window into our ancestor’s stories---sometimes offering important clues about new relatives to add to our family tree.

When searching for information about ancestors who lived in the United States, federal census records should be one of the very first sources you consult. Census records can help you reconstruct entire family groups and identify previously unknown relatives. Sometimes you can even discover interesting details and stories that help you better understand their lives.

To provide the community with valuable information about how to use census data for genealogical research the Wabash Valley Genealogy Society (WVGS) will be offering a public program entitled “Understanding Censuses”.

During his presentation, Braught will share some ideas about using the U.S. Population Census for great hints of pedigree.  Participants will learn how and why we have a census; how the census can used as a resource for tracing family history research; and tips, concerns, and a few strategies on how to use the data.

Every major English-language genealogy website should have U.S. census records from 1790 to 1940, and the entire collections for these censuses are free to search on FamilySearch. Since these records are so readily available on-line, virtually everybody can take advantage of them.
