James Sheppard's presentation will begin with the landing of John Smith in Virginia, in 1607. Smith landed in the middle of the Powhatan Confederation, made up of about 30 Native American tribes. The Nansemond tribe was one of those 30 tribes. James' Bass family ancestors, descend from that tribe. As such, his presentation is titled "From Jamestown to Lost Creek: A 200 Year Journey”. (James states that he doesn't descend from Pocahontas, but, she is a cousin.)
Of the original settlers who bought land in the Lost Creek area (east-central portion of Vigo County) in the early 1800's, James' family still owns the majority of its ancestral land. This is something that no other Lost Creek descendant's family can say.
James has been doing research on his own family for about 20 years. In 2011 he took his first DNA test to determine his paternal ancestry. He took a DNA test with ancestry.com in 2012 and in 2013 he took a test with 23andme.com. This was to cover all of the bases and to find DNA matches.
In 2013 James launched a genealogy website, www.lost-creek.org. This site contains information on the vast majority of early Lost Creek inhabitants.
